Five subscriptions most families can replace
Small monthly charges add up. Many households pay for cloud storage, file sync, a password manager and camera recording without thinking about the yearly total. For each of these there is now a mature, open-source alternative you can run at home. Here are the five we replace most often.
1. Photo and cloud storage
iCloud+ and Google One plans keep growing as your photo library does. A private photo server backs up every phone automatically and gives you search, albums and family sharing, stored in your own home.
2. File sync and sharing
Services like Dropbox are handy for keeping files on every device. Self-hosted file sync, such as Nextcloud, does the same job and lets you share folders with family members on your terms.
3. Password manager
Family password plans are worth having, and you should keep using a password manager. A self-hosted vault compatible with the Bitwarden apps gives the whole household secure sharing, with the data stored on your own server.
4. Camera cloud recording
Many doorbell and security cameras need a monthly plan to save video. Cameras that support local recording can save footage to your home server instead, so you keep the video and avoid the monthly fee.
5. AI chat for private documents
If you mainly use an AI chat subscription to summarize bills, letters and paperwork, a private AI assistant running at home can handle much of that work without sending your documents anywhere. Cloud AI is still stronger for some tasks, so this one depends on how you use it.
What to keep
- Email. Running your own email server is rarely worth the trouble. Keep a good email provider.
- Streaming services with content you cannot get anywhere else.
- Anything where the savings are not worth the effort of switching. The point is control and savings, not doing everything yourself.

Owning these tools is not free: there is hardware, setup and upkeep. Our savings calculator compares your subscriptions with the cost of a care plan, so you can see whether switching makes sense for your household.
